I just wrote that I was too tired to upload the photos, but I did anyway.

California ‘07

Friday, October 5th, 2007

Arrived in San Fran on Tuesday and have been busy seeing the sights I missed last year. I headed straight to Haight-ashbury, which is one of those ultra hippy suburbs which refused to die from the sixties. It is also home to one of the coolest record stores in all the world, Amoeba music. The little map which I have from the hostel is a little unclear about the fact that after a certain point the scale is no longer relevant, so I didn’t realise that the Golden Gate park is approximately 500 kilometers long. I had planned to walk all the way to the beach but I got tired and found a tram instead. The beach was really unexciting.

Tuesday night I slept in a dorm which had a terrible snorer, practically had a megaphone attached to his mouth. I ended up crashing in another room after making friends with some backpackers at 3am. That didn’t count for much since I had to awaken at only 5:45 for my ride to Yosemite, which really was a highlight. The bus guide was awesome and we did a photo tour of the sites in the morning. Wednesday afternoon and Friday morning I spent on my own hiking as much as I could through the wilderness. This morning I went for a walk and saw countless squirrels and chipmunks, as well as deer and a bear! The bear was really exciting. I guess I’ve probably walked about 25 km over the last two days in the park alone, so I’m a bit pooped currently. I’m too tired to even upload photos. But I promise, they will come soon.

Tomorrow I’m going down to Silicon Valley for the Google Mentor Summit day. This will be lots of fun.

Off to San Francisco

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

In a few hours I will be heading to the airport to catch my flight to San Fransisco. On Saturday I will be attending the Google Summer of Code mentor summit at Google’s HQ in Mountain View, CA. I’m really excited, as I went last year and it was an excellent event. Only very recently did I realise that I could have attended the Trolltech Developer Days as well, had I been more organised and known about it earlier. I’m a bit cut about this, as I would have really loved to have gone. In place, I’m going to do some hiking around the Yosemite national park, which I am looking forward to.

I won’t have a laptop with me, but I’ll be sure to post updates about the event as I get a chance.

Where are we going?!

I’d forgotten about this little gem. We were on our way home from Cairo and the plane did some in air cavorting before landing in Dubai!

Where are we going!

Busy Busy Bee Weekend

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

The last week has been really busy, in that really great and satisfying way. On Saturday Mish and I went for a hike in the Royal National Park, on a wonderfully sunny day and we spent the day running along cliff edges. There were fishermen (no doubt fishing) off ledges a good 20m above the sea water, and you’d know why if you saw: the water was chaotic and smashing along the rock walls.

Sunday morning I went for a surf with Tony and Dani - great fun at Bondi beach until disaster struck and Tony has his board snapped in two :(. In the afternoon I found some time to fix my KDE4 build and got into some Amarok hacking again, working on the new-and-totally-cool context view. We’re using QGraphicsView which is so yummy and fun to work with.

Yesterday I spent the day at work and was totally surprised when the Tomcat/J2EE application that I’m working on “just worked” when I threw it onto Linux. I was shocked that it worked since the webapp was compiled under Windows, and with a different version of Java. Still very slow, but it worked.

Finally, last night I went to the Red Hot Chili Peppers concert, which was fantastic. Great music, and a much greater ‘funk’ in their live versions of the newer song releases. The only really terrible thing was the support act, Har Mar Superstar, an overweight hairy man who is convinced of his “sexiness” and did a striptease down to his underwear. I thought it was hilarious however, and was laughing the entire set :).
