Bangkok II

Today marks the end of our stay in Bangkok – the fresh wafting smells of pad thai, cooking meat and car fumes will shortly be behind us as we head to the mystical temples of Angkor Wat tomorrow, situated in the heart of Cambodian jungle. Let’s hope we make it through the 15 hour bus ride and the mine filled territories first.

The last two days have been spent wandering the streets of the Thai capital, from the tourist ridden Khao San road to the impoverished city streets of “the other side of the river”. In many ways the city reminds me of a squashed up version of La Paz and Cairo put together – the crazy traffic in the streets, the beggars on the street and the tourist brought merchants who look like they have come out of Peru with colourful ponchos and frog sounding gimmicks. One thing that I have found unique about Bangkok is the abundance of food. For a not-so-developed country, food is found everywhere. I can’t complain, because the variety and the prices are so tempting!

Thats all for now, and happy Australia Day!

ps – thanks to all that commented on our pants; they truly are cool. We even had a travel photographer insist we pose for him to take photos as the epitome of misguided backpackers.
