Hi All,
I’ve been in Bangkok now for nearly 24 hours, and they have been totally jam-packed. I met Rosie in the airport at about 10pm last night, and bumped into a helpful french girl named Cecile who pointed us in the correct direction to find some cool places to stay and eat. Khao San is by far the coolest backpacker containment I have ever been to. We pay around $6 for a small room with beds and air conditioning. What more can you want!
Sleep came at about 3am, and the noise of the buzzing city awoke us at a shy 7am. It wasn’t really a bad thing, because we had plenty to do, starting by finding a nice place to eat banana pancakes for breakfast – not to mention the crazy drunks! Bangkok is the kind of city where everything looks the same, and as a stubborn backpacker, refusing to make eye-contact with taxi drivers, merchants and tuk-tuk drivers resulted in walking the same street six or seven times. But at least I have my bearings now. A bewildered stroll through the city caused us to bump into a friendly Thai-guy who set us up with a tuk-tuk (crazy taxi on meth-amphetamines or something, with no sides and 3 wheels) for a meagre 50B. Turns out today was a yearly event where the government sponsored all tuk-tuk travel, and hence we had a personal chauffeur to show us the sights today. This included the 70m standing buddha, the 50 metre lying buddha and unexpectadly a sitting buddha to complete the trio.
The royal palace is truly an incredible site. Enormous is a negligable word to describe the proportions of such royalty. Lots of gold, lots of buildings and lots of BIG things to top it off. We are absolutely buggered to say the least, we had a snooze this afternoon to pump some energy to go out tonight.
I suppose it’s only been one day and I am already rambling about travels, but it’s fun, and I want to make you jealous with these photos!!
All the best, and take care,
Seb
